The deadline for submitting the proposals for the CC Catalyst program ended on 30th June 2010. The purpose of the program is to “further the CC’s mission of building legal and technical infrastructure for the commons”. CC Jordan and CC Australia have submitted a proposal to that program entitled “CC Policy Makers and Industry Leaders Arab World Forum”.

Professor Brian Fitzgerald from Queensland University of technology has chaired the workshop on “Open Content and Open Licensing in the Arab World: Opportunities and Challenges Facing their use and Applicability” and gave an introductory remark on Creative Commons and its importance to the region. He introduced Mr. Ziad Maraqa from Abu- Ghazaleh Intellectual Property and his involvement with Creative Commons Jordan as a co- project leader.

The Oxford Internet Institute Summer Doctoral Program for 2009 that was held from 6-17 July in QUT Brisbane, Australia has just finished. I was fortunate enough to be accepted in the program and attend with a scholarship from CCI.

The rise of digital networked technologies has meant that copyright is now central to most everything we do from recreation to research. Every time we use digital technology – which needs to reproduce and communicate to operate - we automate the possibility of copyright infringement.

The purpose of this presentation is to consider how copyright law in its current form fits the challenges of the digital age and in particular how it might be improved to promote the possibilities for innovation especially in developing countries.  We take the Federal Law No. (7) of 2002 (UAE) Pertaining to Copyrights and Neighbouring Rights as our case study.
